Natural denatured ethanol product is produced by mixing two types of alcohol and powdered bitrex to make a solution. Pure ethanol of 96.2% or 96.4% concentration and Tertiary Butyl Alcohol of 0.01% concentration is mixed with 10ppm bitrex. Purity of ethanol is measured by concentration of the substance of ethanol in liquid solution. Volume of ethanol over volume of the final solution (v/v) is the most accurate measurement of purity.

At a concentration of 96.4% there are 964 ethanol particles for every 38 other particles, in a 1000 particle solution. This 96.4% pure denatured ethanol has bitrex added to it. Bitrex contains the most bitter tasting compound known as denatonium benzoate. It is added to denatured alcohol to prevent oral consumption. Denatured alcohol is toxic when ingested, so it is not intended for manufacturing beverages.
